Cement company claims it will forgo profit from residential land to subsidise sustainability costs

Planning permission has been granted for Lafarge Cement UK's redevelopment of its redundant quarry at Magheramorne in Northern Ireland. The plans to develop the 153ha site into a 450-home harbour village and major leisure attraction include a World Cycling Centre and an all-Ireland scuba diving centre. Lafarge claims it will forego all profit it would ordinarily receive from the value of the residential land in order to help subsidise additional costs associated with the ultra-green development. David Simms, Lafarge's planning director, described the project as 鈥渘ot about making money, [but] about leaving a legacy鈥.
