New £100m-plus complex due to open by 2026

Kier has won the preconstruction services contract to build a new prison that will replace Glasgow’s Barlinnie jail.

The Victorian-era prison dates back to 1882 and its famous prisoners have included reformed gangster turned novelist Jimmy Boyle, politician Tommy Sheridan and former footballer Duncan Ferguson.

The Scottish Prison Service has awarded Kier a deal to build HMP Glasgow by 2026 which is expected to cost north of £100m.

How part of the new prison will look

Barlinnie houses around 1,500 people but has a design capacity closer to 1,000.

The new prison will be designed to accommodate 1,200 adult male offenders.

Kier said it will use a Design for Manufacture and Assembly approach to build the complex and is targeting it to be net zero carbon.

Designed by London architect Holmes Miller, others working on the scheme include structural engineer Curtins and M&E consultant Arup. Trade contractors on the job include groundworks and civils firm Careys, precast concrete firm PCE and M&E contractor FES.
