Station's 1850s vaulted roof will be repaired and reglazed, partly using photovoltaic glass

Kier has won a 拢27m contract from Network Rail to renew the large, barrel-vaulted glazed roof at King's Cross station.

Work on the three-year deal will begin in May 2009 and forms part of Network Rail's 拢450m upgrade of the station.

Kier chief executive John Dodds said: 鈥淲e are delighted to be involved in such an innovative and high-profile project, which will be viewed by hundreds of thousands of people every day. This is a key part of the redevelopment of King's Cross station and builds on Kier's existing relationship with Network Rail.鈥

The job will entail the installation of 15,000m2 of glazing, of which 2,500m2 is photovoltaic glass that will generate 10% of the station's electricity requirements.

It will also involve the repair, refurbishment and renewal of the main wrought iron structure to restore the 1850s grade I listed building to its former glory.
