Striking design for derelict Sheffield cooling towers will form centrepiece of sustainable business park
A pair of huge lacy sculptures shaped like cooling towers has won first prize for an ideas competition to replace two real but derelict cooling towers in Tinsley, Sheffield.
For its winning scheme, landscape architect Insite Environments has combined a steel lattice frame in Sheffield鈥檚 steel-making tradition with natural, organic forms that evoke the wild landscape that has reclaimed the site.
It also includes a novel sustainable business park that retains much of the existing wild vegetation. The competition backers, which include Groundwork Sheffield, English Partnerships and Rotherham and Sheffield councils hope the winning scheme, along with two other prize winners by DLA Architecture and Astudio with Alfredo Caraballo respectively, can form 鈥渢he basis of a shared vision鈥 to regenerate the site.
