Scheme drawn up for the University of Illinois at Chicago
A team led by OMA has won the University of Illinois at Chicago鈥檚 design competition for a new $95m (拢75m) Center of the Arts.
The design from Rem Koolhaas鈥檚 firm, which worked with Chicago firm KOO Architecture, trumped plans from two other finalists 鈥 Los Angeles-based Johnston Marklee, paired with Chicago鈥檚 UrbanWorks Architecture, and California鈥檚 Morphosis Architecture teamed with another local firm STL Archtitects.
The three finalists were chosen from an international pool of 36 teams that responded to a public request for qualifications.
The winning concept design, which will house the University鈥檚 College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts, proposes two towers 鈥 a student tower that faces the campus and opens to a performance park and a public tower that looks to the city and opens to a screening plaza.
As a home for the School of Theatre and Music, the project includes a 500-seat concert hall and a 270-seat mainstage theatre as well as instrumental and choral rehearsal halls and theatre production shops.
The design also includes support facilities, a jazz club and exhibition space.
