Grimshaw teams up with local firm Glenn Howells Architects for the plans
Images of a proposed redevelopment of Birmingham’s second busiest train station have been revealed.
Drawn up by Grimshaw and local practice Glenn Howells Architects, the new look for Birmingham Moor Street station is part of a proposal to link it with the city’s biggest station at New Street and the new station that will be built for HS2 at Curzon Street, which has also been designed by the two practices.
The new-look station would more than double the size of the concourse from 910m2 to 2000m2, and includes several options to improve pedestrian access between Moor Street and New Street.
Plans also include a new footbridge that would take passengers directly to HS2 services from Curzon Street via a new public square.
A second entrance to the south of the station has also been proposed to improve passenger flow, avoid overcrowding and create better access to the proposed £1.5bn Smithfield project, which Lendlease is set to develop.
The plans maintain the grade II-listed entrance and concourse of the station, which dates back to 1914.
