HSE Northern Ireland sends inspectors on site to monitor the situation
A building under construction on Belfast’s Victoria Street collapsed this morning.
The HSE Northern Ireland confirmed that there had been an accident and that inspectors were on site to monitor the situation. Five workers are reported to have been injured.
The collapse took place on a site of the Law Society of Northern Ireland.
Contractors Turkington Construction said it deeply regrets the incident.
The firm's managing director and health & safety manager have been on site since this morning acting on behalf of the company and liaising with the sub-contractors, the HSE and the emergency services.
A spokesperson said: "We are now working closely with HSE to investigate the causes of the incident and to ensure the site is secured to the public and our workforce.
"Our main concern at this time, is with the employees of our specialist sub-contractor who were injured, and with their families with whom we are in constant contact."
The scheme estimated at £8.7m includes a ground floor retail unit and offices on the second floor. It is due for completion in November this year.
