Foreign Office Architects reveals 拢598m scheme, which includes a redesigned atrium
Designs for the 拢598m revamp of Birmingham鈥檚 New Street station have been unveiled.
The scheme, designed by Foreign Office Architects and structural engineer Adams Kara Taylor, aims to create capacity for more than 52 million rail users a year.
Plans include a redesigned atrium intended to 鈥渇lood the station with light鈥, digital displays to mark the station鈥檚 entrances, and reflective metal sheets on the outside.
Launching the designs, Mike Whitby, chairman of the New Street Gateway funders' board, which is backing the project, said: 鈥淭he Birmingham Gateway, which will support over 52 million passengers a year, demands a world-class architectural vision to embody the rebirth of New Street station.
鈥淲ith the world looking on, this breathtaking design firmly places Birmingham on the international map for very high quality, daring design.鈥
The station, which was built in the 1960s has been heavily criticised in the past for looking outdated.
The scheme is expected to complete by 2014.
