Architect beats off 78 competitors with design for visitor centre based on a huge oak tree
A new Sherwood Forest Visitor centre will be designed by architect Ken Shuttleworth鈥檚 practice Make, it was announced today.
The team beat off 78 international competitors with a proposal based on a huge oak tree. Also on the shortlist were practices Glen Howells Architects, Niall McLaughlin, Richard Murphy, Patel Taylor and Wilkinson Eyre.
Shuttleworth said he wanted the designs to reflect the forest. He said: 鈥淭he tree celebrates the spirit of the forest and will provide the public with a fantastic gateway to the UK鈥檚 most famous forest, while spearheading the wider regeneration of the Sherwood area.鈥
The designs will now be submitted by Nottinghamshire County Council to the Big Lottery Living Landmark grants programme in 2007. It will be one of six regional or nationally significant regeneration projects all bidding to win funds.
A panel of judges will then decide which projects should go through to a public vote. This will be televised nationally and a single grant will be awarded to the winner to take the project forward.
