A series of tornadoes has hit England, smashing homes, cars and trees

Violent winds up to 60 mph have caused damage across the country.

The Met Office said winds had hit Northampton, Luton in Bedfordshire, Breaston in Derbyshire, Farnborough in Hampshire and Nuneaton in Warwickshire. In a statement it said that the winds were "conducive to tornadoes".

In Luton a violent storm hit at 7am, ripping tiles off house roofs.

Part of a factory roof was blown off in Breaston, Derbyshire.

According to the fire service, 20 houses were hit in Farnborough at 8am tearing away a garage roof and uprooting trees.

Winds damaged about 20 homes in Trafford Drive, Nuneaton. According to the Warwickshire Police tiles came off the roofs, cars were crushed and debris scattered across the streets.
