Practice鈥檚 proposals for 20th Century art gallery picked for Kulturforum slot
Herzog & de Meuron has won the design competition for a new Berlin gallery that will increase the display space available for the German capital鈥檚 existing collections of 20th Century art.
The Swiss practice came out top from 40 proposals, including a bid from OMA, for the new Museum of the 20th Century, which will sit alongside Ludwig Mies van der Rohe鈥檚 Neue Nationalgalerie and Hans Scharoun鈥檚 Berliner Philharmonie in the capital鈥檚 Kulturforum cluster of cultural buildings.
The gallery will focus its permanent display on art from the second half of the last century and will be funded by a 鈧200 million award made by the German parliament to the Prussian Cultural Heritage in 2014.
In its proposal, Herzog & de Meuron said the structure鈥檚 form would provoke questions in those who saw it.
鈥淚s it a warehouse? Or a barn? Or maybe a railway station concourse? Isn鈥檛 it more of a temple with exactly the same gable forms as those on the Alte Nationalgalerie designed by August St眉ler?鈥, it said.
鈥淚ndeed, it is a place of storage like a warehouse, a place of supplies and nutriment like a working farm, and a place of encounter and connection like a station concourse.
鈥淎nd 鈥 like a temple 鈥 it is also a place of silence and reflection, of the perception of art, of the perception of oneself.鈥
Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation president Hermann Parzinger said the winning entry brought a 鈥渃ompletely new approach鈥 to museum architecture.
鈥淲hat they propose follows clear, simple, but very impressive forms,鈥 he said.
鈥淭heir design fits in perfectly with the two 鈥榙ivas鈥 of Mies van der Rohe and Scharoun, with whom it deliberately does not want to compete, yet it sends a very strong signal.鈥
The winning bid, designed in conjunction with landscape architect Vogt, beat submissions from Lundgaard & Tranberg, Bruno Fioretti Marquez and Staab Architekten among others.
Earlier this summer, Herzog & de Meuron鈥檚 Tate Modern extension in London opened while building work on its new 拢500 million stadium for west London Premier League side Chelsea is due to start next July.
