Government gives go-ahead to build 16 facilities in north of England
A 拢66.4m programme to build fire stations in the north of England was today given the go-ahead by the government.
The Department for Communities and Local Government said 16 stations would be constructed in Cumbria, Lancashire and Merseyside.
The facilities, to be built under the North West Fire and Rescue Service PFI project, will replace ageing and poorly located stations, it said.
Fire Minister Parmjit Dhanda said: 鈥淚t's important that we have modern fire stations based at the heart of our communities, ones that welcome the public as well as keeping them safe.
鈥淭hat's why I'm delighted to confirm this multi-million pound funding to build 16 state-of-the-art fire stations in Cumbria, Lancashire and Merseyside.
鈥淲e need 21st Century fire stations with up-to-date facilities that provide better working conditions for male and female firefighters so they can fully represent the communities they serve.鈥
