Grant Shapps replaces Chris Grayling
Grant Shapps
Role: Secretary of state for transport
Constituency: Welwyn Hatfield
Replacing: Chris Grayling
Biography: Shapps was born in Croxley Green, Hertfordshire, and has been the MP for Welwyn Hatfield since 2005. Shapps unsuccessfully contested the seat of North Southwark and Bermondsey, held by Lib Dem Simon Hughes, at the 1997 general election. He also stood for the Welwyn Hatfield constituency in the 2001 general election, again unsuccessfully. While in opposition, Shapps was appointed vice chairman of the Conservative party in 2005, before being made shadow housing minister in June 2007. He is married with three children.
What this means for construction: Shapps, who served as housing minister between 2010 and 2012, is no stranger to working with the construction sector. He has consistently voted for HS2 and voted with the government to approve the expansion of Heathrow airport, according theyworkforyou.com. He is also the chair of the British Infrastructure Group of Parliamentarians, which is a group of cross-party MPs and peers who are committed to promoting better infrastructure across the UK.
Delighted and honoured to have been appointed the new Secretary of State for Transport.
