Measures include free legal representation and more advice for those with debts
The government has announced a 拢10m package of measures to support homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages.
Alistair Darling, the chancellor of the exchequer, and Caroline Flint, the housing minister, have together introduced a bundle of advice and support for borrowers who are having difficulties with their mortgages.
The measures include:
- Greater access to free legal representation at county courts in England for home-owners facing repossession
- A bulked-up National Housing Advice Service to provide assistance and advice on those with crippling debts
- Further training on debt advice for Citizen Advice Bureau staff and local authorities to help families sort out their finances.
The Chancellor met with the six major retail banks in the UK - Lloyds, Barclays, RBS, HBOS, Abbey and HSBC 鈥 to persuade them to work with consumer and debt advice groups.
