Over 100 fire fighters tackled blaze at Basingstoke structure

A four-storey timber frame building under construction in Basingstoke in Hampshire has been destroyed by fire.

The fire services arrived at around 6.30pm on Friday evening to the construction site in Gershwin Road in Brighton Hill. More than 100 fire fighters and 12 specialist support vehicles tackled the blaze and residents from nearby homes had to be evacuated.

The building is believed to be sheltered housing for the elderly and measured around 100m by 200m. No injuries were reported and an investigation into the cause of the fire is now under way.
