Architect wins international competition to design luxury hotel in historic Tivoli Gardens
Foster and Partners has won an international competition to design the first Four Seasons Hotel in Scandinavia set within Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens.
The project includes a luxury hotel and apartments, which the practice says will celebrate the historic site and provide a landmark for the city.
To preserve Copenhagen’s low skyline, the scheme comprises an cluster of interconnecting cylinders that form a podium corresponding to the heights of the surrounding rooflines. Rising from the podium, a slender sculptural tower acts as a marker for the scheme and relates in scale to the City Hall tower opposite.
In addition to allowing for rainwater collection, the lower buildings are oriented to maximise natural light and views while reducing unwanted solar gain in the summer, but capturing the sun’s rays in the cooler winter months.
Lord Foster said: “The Tivoli Gardens Hotel project requires delicacy of scale and sensitivity to Copenhagen’s rich design heritage, combined with a bold vision for a new design that has integrity and presence. This is a challenge that we, as architects, welcome. I look forward to working with Tivoli and the city on the project’s successful realisation."
