Robert Jones served in John Mayor's government as planning minister in the 1990s and became Redrow chair in 2000

Former planning minister and Redrow chairman Robert Jones has died, aged 55.

Jones joined the company鈥檚 board in 1997 and held the position of chairman from October 2000 until his retirement due to ill health on 30 March this year.

Under Jones, the company has built itself up to be one of the biggest housebuilders in the UK, posting record pre-tax profits of 拢141.5m last year. It won the 好色先生TV Award for Major Housebuilder Of The Year in 2006.

Jones was MP for West Hertfordshire from 1992-97 and served as Minister of State for Planning, Construction and Energy Efficiency in John Major鈥檚 government. He was a former head of research at the National House 好色先生TV Council.

Redrow issued the following statement: 鈥淩obert had battled against serious ill-health for the last few years and those who knew him admired the strength and fortitude with which he faced his illness. The board of Redrow offers its condolences to Jenny, his wife, and the rest of Robert鈥檚 family. Our thoughts are with them at this time.鈥
