WATG鈥檚 鈥楪reen Block鈥 a response to London mayor鈥檚 National Park City challenge
London鈥檚 Fleet Street has been re-imagined as a flora-festooned boulevard, as part of the capital鈥檚 mayor Sadiq Khan鈥檚 plans to designate it a National Park City.
Architect WATG has come up with the conceptual design of a 鈥楪reen Block鈥 (pictured), which it said is 鈥渆nvisaged as a maintenance-free 100% recyclable modular, living building material permeated with native wildflower seeds and containing its own irrigation reservoir鈥.
It is working with self-styled 鈥檊uerrilla gardener鈥 Daniel Raven-Ellison on the Green Block, which it said can be used to enhance the natural biodiversity of London in a number of ways, including reclaiming redundant roads and car parks - as autonomous and shared vehicle use and bicycle schemes increase - and adding greenery to existing caf茅s and shopfronts.
John Goldwyn, WATG鈥檚 vice president of planning and landscape, said the firm鈥檚 inspiration was to think about London in the future when there are fewer cars on the road and fewer car lanes.
鈥淭his idea claws back space from the roads and returns it to the people of London. As landscape architects, we鈥檝e been incredibly inspired by Mayor Khan鈥檚 commitment to the environment in the capital.鈥
