Former hospital site will include 950 homes, of which 50% will be affordable
Construction is set to begin on an east London housing scheme jointly backed by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and the London Development Agency (LDA).
The former St Andrew鈥檚 Hospital site in Bow will consist of more than 950 new homes, of which 50% will be affordable, healthcare facilities and public spaces. Barratt Homes will act as developer with housing association, Circle Anglia.
Southwark-based architect, Allies and Morrison, has developed the masterplan, of which a third will be landscaped open space.
Boris Johnson, the London mayor, said the scheme showed how smart planning could beat the recession: 鈥淚t is also a welcome boost to the capital's economy and will support existing and create new jobs in the construction sector at a critical time. It is a fantastic addition to the capital providing great new facilities for Londoners along with many desperately needed homes...鈥
HCA regional director, David Lunts, added that St Andrews proved that funding models were working: 鈥溾淲e are doing everything we can to get projects moving quickly. The HCA鈥檚 flexible investment model and partnership working means we can respond effectively to bring forward much needed affordable housing.鈥
The first phase of the development will include a new NHS facility with potential to accommodate up to 16 GPs.
