Project designed by Metaphorm contains 40 units and is one of borough鈥檚 Heygate Estate replacement projects

Contractor Durkan recently completed Library Street housing development in Southwark鈥檚 Elephant & Castle.

The project, which is one of the schemes to rehouse residents of the soon-to-be-demolished Heygate Estate, uses red brick in a reference to the surrounding environment and is intended to remove visual differences between public and private housing.

The buillding, which had a budget of 拢5.3m and was designed by architect Metaphorm, contains a mixture of large family flats and four bedroom town houses. There are 40 units in the development as a whole.

Each unit has a whole house heating system with heat recovery to make it more sustainable and the building鈥檚 concrete frame serves as thermal mass. The design also includes greywater and rainwater harvesting.

The project was commissioned by Southwark council and London & Quadrant Housing Association.
