BREAAM 'Excellent' building saves 拢6m in running costs over the life of the lease
Drivers Jonas (DJ) has won the Home Office鈥檚 Supplier of the Year Award for Most Beneficial Contribution to Sustainability.
The property consultancy scooped the prize for its work on the first BREEAM 鈥楨xcellent鈥 rated building in Sheffield, Vulcan House which sits on the banks of the River Don. Sir David Normington, Permanent Secretary for the Home Office and Meg Hillier MP presented the award at a ceremony in London.
Vulcan House (known as Steel and Iron) was created to consolidate five Home Office UK Borders Agency sites into one building. The high environmental standards of the building are set to save 拢6m in running costs over the life of the lease. Low capital expenditure was also a requirement of the project which started in 2003.
Peter Wilkinson, head of DJ north project management and building consultancy, said: 鈥淥ne of the greatest sources of pride is the way in which the buildings have been designed to conserve energy and drive out waste in a way which provides a truly modern example of sustainable engineering.鈥
The supplier value awards, of which there are seven, are awarded by the Home Office for achieving notable efficiency, creativity or cost savings.
Vulcan House Steel was the second-highest rated BREEAM scoring building in the UK at the time of assessment. Designed by architects, Hadfield Cawkell Davidson with Mott MacDonald as consulting engineers, the building includes argon-filled double glazing, solar protective glass and insulated ceramic panels.
