Design by Architects John Pawson and OMA for museum’s new home at former Commonwealth Institute building
The Design Museum has unveiled £80m plans for its new home at the former Commonwealth Institute building in Kensington, London.
Architect John Pawson redesigned the interior of the grade-II listed building and Dutch firm OMA planned the surrounding residential development.
The move will allow bring the museum, currently based in Shad Thames, into Kensington’s cultural quarter, where it will join the V&A, Science Museum, Natural History Museum, Royal College of Art and the Serpentine Gallery.
The proposals maintain the distinctive parabolic roof of RMJM’s 1962 structure and provide a new central atrium, mezzanine, basement and improved access. The grade-II listed building has been empty since 2002.
The new Design Museum, which is an £80m project, will open in 2014, and will give the museum three times more space to showcase its collection.
