Urban Land Institute launches best practice guide for fast-growing sector
A new design guide for the fast-growing build to rent sector has been published by the Urban Land Institute.
The organisation's residential council has launched the second edition of its ‘Build to Rent: A Best Practice Guide’, responding to huge recent growth in the sector.
The new edition covers best practice in the design, delivery, management and maintenance of purpose-built rental homes as well as planning, viability, cost, procurement and how best to understand the prospective customer.
Since the first edition launched in 2014, private renting has become the largest – and only growing - housing tenure in the UK with the number of UK households who rent their home growing over 10% and Savills predicting a 20% increase in the next five years.
The new guide also reflects patterns in the form and layout of Build to Rent designs have also started to emerge in the UK sector.
Russell Pedley, director of Assael Architecture and the ULI UK's residential council vice chair, commented: "The UK's Build to Rent offer has evolved into a design approach that is a balance of design from the 'inside-out', as well as 'outside-in'.
"Dwelling design efficiency, combined with structural efficiency and building systems efficiency are central to delivering a more cost effective development strategy that drives the economics of the rental model, delivers homes that work and are desirable places to live."
