Newcastle Brown Ale bottling plant is demolished by Sir Bobby Robson to make way for Downing college development
The Newcastle Brown Ale bottling plant has been demolished to make way for a new scheme by Downing Developments.
Explosives were used to break apart the pre-stressed concrete building, and were detonated by Newcastle football legend Sir Bobby Robson.
A business college for Newcastle University will start on site in the Autumn and will be completed by September 2010.
The site lies adjacent to the £700m Science City and will include a 183-bed hotel, 102 service apartments, 70,000 sq ft of office space and 462 apartments for students.
A planning application for change of use has been submitted.
The main contractor on the scheme is Tolent and the demolition specialist is Controlled Demolition.
