RIBA awards Stirling Prize winner the 2011 Royal Gold Medal for architecture
David Chipperfield has won RIBA鈥檚 2011 Royal Gold Medal for architecture.
The award recognises Chipperfield鈥檚 contribution to architecture and will be presented next February at RIBA.
On hearing the news Chipperfield said: 鈥淚 am overwhelmed by the decision of the RIBA to award me the 2010 Royal Gold Medal and to join a list that includes so many great architects and personal heroes.鈥
鈥淚 hope that my career will justify this great honour and that I can fulfil the expectations that this award bestows on me. I share this award with my colleagues and family without whom such a personal achievement would have been well out of reach.鈥
Previous winners include Sir Edwin Lutyens, Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Norman Foster, Richard Rogers, Frank Gehry, Toyo Ito, Herzog and de Meuron, Alvaro Siza and I. M. Pei.
In 2007 David Chipperfield won the Stirling Prize with the Museum of Modern Literature in Marbach am Neckar.
