Planners approve Rick Mather Architects’ Fairfield Halls upgrade and new homes

Members of Croydon council’s planning committee have approved a package of upgrade work for the borough’s main arts complex and a tranche of new town-centre homes.

They gave the green light to Rick Mather Architects’ proposals for Fairfield Halls, which will refurbish the 1960s venue and create a new 2,000 sq m art gallery in the venue’s underground car park. Mott MacDonald is the masterplanner.

The detailed proposals also include the demolition of a nearby multi-storey carpark to make way for 218 new homes split between a 21-storey tower and three lower-rise blocks of up to eight storeys.

The overall regeneration of the College Green area – focused on Fairfield Halls – is being delivered by the council’s development company Brick by Brick.

It targets a total of 2,000 new homes, a new college, new shops and new office space, delivered over multiple phases.

Councillor Alison Butler, Croydon’s cabinet member for homes, regeneration and planning, said College Green was a “hugely symbolic” project for the borough and crucial to its overall regeneration and growth ambitions.

“The proposal will revitalise an under-used and tired area, turning it into a vibrant public space and reconnecting it with the rest of the town centre,” she said.

“It will also supply much-needed new homes and jobs as well as fantastic arts, leisure and educational facilities.”

Mott MacDonald was appointed to masterplan the redevelopment of the College Green area in 2015 and an extensive programme of works to strip out Fairfield Halls to prepare the building for new construction work has been underway since last summer.

The practice’s proposals for Fairfield Halls won a New London Architecture award for conservation and retrofit in September last year.
