Five joint ventures to compete to build 21km of tunnels under central London, with the winner being announced early next year
Crossrail has released the bidders shortlisted to carry out the tunnelling works for the largest single lot of the £16bn scheme.
The teams competing are:
- a joint venture comprising Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering Limited, Morgan Est plc, Vinci Construction Grand Projets and Beton-und Monierbau Gesellschaft;
- a joint venture comprising BAM Nuttall Limited, Ferrovial Agroman (UK) Limited and Keir Construction Limited;
- a joint venture comprising Costain Limited, Skanska Construction UK Limited and Bilfinger Berger Civil (Ingeneirbau GmbH);
- a joint venture comprising Dragados, S.A. and John Sisk & Son (Holdings) Limited; and
- a joint venture comprising Laing O’Rourke Construction and Bouygues Travaux Publics SA.
The work is split into two lots and involves the construction of 6.2m-internal diameter twin-bored tunnels under central London, which will be around 21km in length.
Work is expected to take around 66 months.
The tunnels will be bored from Royal Oak Portal near Paddington Station through to the new Crossrail Farringdon Station to the west and to the east, a portal at Limmo Peninsular through to the new Crossrail Farringdon station, a launch chamber at Stepney Green through to Pudding Mill Lane Portal, and a portal at Limmo Peninsula through to Victoria Dock Portal to the east.
Every 500m, cross passages will be bored for ventilation.
Crossrail is expected to announce a winner early next year.
