Sites at Ilford and Romford in line for revamp
Crossrail has said it expects to appoint contractors at the end of this month for work to revamp a pair of overground stations at the line’s eastern end.
The stations at Ilford, in east London, and Romford, in Essex, are due to be upgraded by Network Rail ahead of Crossrail’s arrival.
Work had been expected to start earlier this summer but the scheme’s chief executive Mark Wild told the London Assembly that the “forecast for contracts to be awarded [is] at the end of August".
The work at Ilford, which has been drawn up by London architect Landolt + Brown, includes rebuilding an entrance while at Romford planned works include installing lifts, step-free access from platform to street and refurbishing the ticket hall.
Crossrail trains were due to start running the full length of the line in December this year but delays to the scheme mean there is now no planned start date for these services.
