Usual suspects win a place on four-strong list

Four consortiums have been shortlisted for Crossrail鈥檚 biggest remaining station job, the 拢375m rebuilding of Farringdon Station.

The consortiums are:

  • Balfour Beatty, Alpine BeMo, Morgan Sindall & Vinci
  • Costain Skanska
  • Laing O鈥橰ourke & Strabag
  • BAM Nuttall, Ferrovial Agroman & Kier Construction

Farringdon is the most expensive of the remaining stations because it is built over two different rock types, and the meeting point of Crossrail with Thameslink and three other tube lines, as well as the point where Crossrail鈥檚 two tunnel boring machines meet.

The contract involves construction of both the eastern and western integrated ticket halls, and providing access to Crossrail, London Underground and Thameslink services. When complete 140 trains per hour will flow through the Farringdon interchange with an estimated 140,000 passengers will use Farringdon station every day.

The six remaining stations to be tendered this year are worth 拢1.5bn in total.

Andy Mitchell, Crossrail programme director said: 鈥淔arringdon is a key station on the Crossrail route and will be a major passenger hub for Tube and rail services. The scale of the new Crossrail station is such that it will stretch all the way from Farringdon to Barbican. In construction terms, Farringdon is a hugely important station.鈥
