Battersea Crane Disaster Action Group makes passionate safety plee to Lord McKenzie
The Battersea Crane Disaster Action Group met Lord McKenzie yesterday to discuss its submission for the inquiry into health and safety regulation.
It told the parliamentary under-secretary for the department for Work and Pensions it still wants a national public register for all cranes in the UK.
It also demanded an enforcement blitz of the construction industry, an inquiry into the casualisation of workers and inspections and spot checks of all major construction sites. Finally, it called for more funding for the HSE.
The submission has been sent to the department for Work and Pensions as part of the select committee inquiry into the Health and Safety Executive and the Health and Safety Commission.
The meeting is the latest in a series of actions by the group. Last week it held a vigil outside the Adam Smith Institute in London, where chairman of the DWP select committee Terry Rooney was having lunch.
The previous week it gathered at the site of the Forest Hill crane collapse.
The first evidence session for the inquiry will take place on Wednesday, with evidence from the Federation of Master Builders.
