Eight injured, citation ordered after debris falls 53 storeys onto street
Work has been suspended on a site next to New York's Times Square after a crane load smashed into the side of a signature skyscraper under construction.
The crane dropped a crate from the top of the 53-storey Bank of America tower, which is under construction one city block from Times Square in Manhattan.
The crate hit the 45th floor and several others on the way down before it fell on to a subway entrance that was closed as part of the project.
Four of the injured were workers, three of which were in the subway stairwell, and four were pedestrians.
A spokeman for construction manager Tishman Construction Group said they did not yet know what had caused the accident and did not know if the load was attached to the crane at the time.
The New York City ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV Department has ordered a citation and served a stop-work order to review Tishmam's operations.
