Gpvernment predicts decrease in spending on new housing and upgrades

Local authorities鈥� spending on housing is set to drop by 拢500m during this year, new figures show.

Capital expenditure on housing will go down to 拢5bn in 2008/9 from 拢4.5bn in 2007/8, the government predicted. The 2007/8 figure included 拢500m paid when Liverpool City Council sold its housing to a housing association.

Spending also dropped by 拢27m between 2006/7 and 2007/8.

Councils received 拢1.69bn in 2007/8 from housing, largely from sales.
