Expressions of interest due in later this month

Contractors have been put on notice for a 拢20m refurbishment of the grade A-listed King鈥檚 Theatre in Edinburgh.

The 拢19.9m redevelopment of the theatre, designed by Bennetts Associates, will include a new cafe-bar and an education space.

The stage will be flattened to attract opera and dance companies and the orchestra pit will be rebuilt to improve acoustics.

The successful contractor is expected to have previous experience on projects with similarities.

This includes carrying out complex refurbishments, working on listed premises with heritage status and design integration, as well as having worked in a busy city centre location.

to redesign the theatre, which opened in 1906 and is the only surviving operational theatre by the architects Swanston and Davidson.

The renovation is expected to more than double the opening hours and is hoped to increase visitor numbers by 50%, from 200,000 a year.

Bidders have until to express their interest and invitations to tender are due to be sent towards the end of next month.

Redevelopment works are scheduled to begin next September, with the theatre closed for 20 months and reopening in summer 2023.
