Construction saw the biggest rise in employment across all sectors over the second quarter, according to official figures.
Around 53,000 people were taken on by construction firms during the three months from April to June this year, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics today. The figure was 2.6% up on the previous quarter, but down by 72,000 or 3.3% from the same quarter in 2009.
Across all sectors the number of people employed rose by 71,000 from the first quarter 鈥 a rise of 0.2%. Once again the news was less positive when compared year-on-year, with employment actually down by 196,000 (0.6%) from the second quarter 2009.
The number of redundancies in construction dropped by 23,000 year-on-year to 21,000 during the three months, a reduction of 53%.
