National Indoor Sports arena to be renamed after cyclist wins record third gold meda
Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games sports arena is to be named after the Olympic cyclist Chris Hoy after he became the first Briton in 100 years to win three Olympic gold medals at a single Games.
The stadium, which will include a full-sized velodrome, has been designed by architects 3D Reid and Sports Concepts. The exact name of the stadium is unknown, but the venue was previously known as the National Indoor Sports Arena.
Hoy, from Edinburgh, today won his third gold medal at the Beijing Olympic Games at the final of the men’s sprint competition. He has also taken gold medals in the team spring and keirin events.
Steven Purcell, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "I can think of no better way of marking his historic success than by naming Scotland's only world-class track cycling facility after him."
Hoy has more than a passing interest in velodrome design, as he sat on the jury for the Olympic Velodrome competition for London 2012, won by Hopkins Architects and Expedition Engineering.
