Training body says hundreds of jobs are needed to keep skilled workers in the industry
The Construction Industry Training Board has called on construction employers to offer opportunities to the hundreds of Carillion workers who have lost their jobs in the fallout from the company’s collapse.
A new has been set up on the CITB website, collating job opportunities in each nation and region, to help Carillion staff find new employment.
The CITB said there were more than 100 employers across England, Scotland and Wales offering job opportunities in a wide range of roles, but that this fell far short of the number needed to cater for the 1,000 former Carillion workers who have lost their jobs during the liquidation so far.
The training body said more opportunities neede to be brought forward in order to keep the skilled workers in the industry.
CITB has played a major role in the wake of Carillion’s closure, being the driving force behind the redistribution of Carillion’s 1,400 apprentices.
In the month since the company went bust, the CITB saisd nearly 200 apprentices had been found college places, while another 725 had been placed with new firms.
Chief executive Sarah Beale is also part of the government’s taskforce looking to mitigate the effects of Carillion’s liquidations on both industry and the people involved.
Mark Noonan, industry relations director at CITB, said: “The support shown by employers to date has been outstanding but there’s more to be done and I encourage employers to hire these talented people to help meet your demand.
“If you are a former Carillion worker who is no longer in employment, please go to the CITB website – there are hundreds of job opportunities being displayed each day and one might just be the perfect role for you.
A Facebook support group for Carillion staff has attracted more than 2,100 members.
Called Carillion Colleagues Support – Employee led, the group was created by staff the day after the firm collapsed.
