Consultant to design 72-bed recovery unit at Devonport Naval Base

Capita Symonds has won a contract to design a 拢22m rehabilitation unit for injured armed forces personnel in Plymouth.

Planning has been submitted for the unit at HMS Drake in Devonport Naval Base, which will comprise a four-storey, 72-bed, ensuite accommodation block as well as classrooms, interview rooms, communal facilities, and six family suites for visiting family members.

Forces charity Help for Heroes has pledged 拢10m funding to the project.

Co-founder of the organisation Bryn Parry said: 鈥淭he intention is to create a recovery centre where guys can go after receiving initial treatment at [defence rehabilitation centre] Headley Court. There are a lot of people whose injuries are very severe. We need to create a place where these guys can go and recover in a military environment. It will not be a convalescent home, it will be a place of opportunity.鈥�

The planning application is the first phase of a two-stage plan. Another application will be submitted later this year for further facilities including a swimming pool and consultation rooms.
 
The site will be directly linked to Hasler Company, a recovery unit for injured Royal Marines also situated at Devonport.
