Balfour Beatty has won the job to build the University of Edinburgh’s £110m student accommodation project
The Holyrood North & South scheme, which straddles two sites on Holyrood Road in Edinburgh, comprises a 50-year concession contract involving the design, build and maintenance of student accommodation facilities for the University of Edinburgh.
The project includes 1,150 bedrooms for mainly postgraduate students as well as an outreach centre and retail units.
Balfour Beatty will invest 100% of the required equity in the project, which is expected to reach financial close in spring 2013.
Balfour Beatty won the contract after seeing off competition from infrastructure and estates management firm UPP.
A master plan for the scheme, drawn up by John C Hope Architects has been approved by Edinburgh council, with the first phase, a Richard Murphy-designed 252-bed student residence, submitted for detailed planning permission last year.
Construction is due to start March 2013.
