Contractor鈥檚 share of joint venture work on Malaysian rail extension expected to be worth 拢160m
Balfour Beatty has won a key part of a 拢300m rail systems contract in Malaysia.
The contractor鈥檚 Malaysian business, Balfour Beatty Rail Sdn Bhd, won the project in a joint venture with Italian firm Ansaldo STS. Balfour Beatty expects its share of the project to be worth about 拢160m.
The contract will see the two teams design, supply and install 330km of double track on the Ipoh to Padang Besar rail extension.
Ian Tyler, chief executive of Balfour Beatty, said: 鈥淏alfour Beatty Rail has played an integral part in the development of the Malaysian rail network and this award is confirmation of continued customer confidence in our ability to implement complex rail systems on a large scale.鈥�
The extension is part of a longer-term project to upgrade the railway connection between Kuala Lumpur and the Thai border, with the further goal of connecting Singapore to China. This project will be completed by January 2013.
