UK’s biggest builder lands one of largest one-off HE deals ever let
Balfour Beatty has won one of the largest single schemes ever let by a higher education institution with a £287m deal to build a new campus for Manchester University.
The scheme, which involves building an engineering campus, is part of a 10 year masterplan by the university to bring its estate up to scratch.
The new campus will house the university’s engineering schools, teaching spaces and research institutes such as the Dalton Nuclear Institute and the BP-International Centre for Advanced Materials.
The development will also feature a wide range of laboratories and lecture spaces for up to 7,000 students and 1,300 members of staff.
At peak, the four year scheme is expected to have around 1,000 workers on site.
Balfour Beatty was appointed to the university’s construction partnering framework back in May 2015 and has been working on the deal under a pre-construction deal for two years. Work is expected to start next year.
The firm’s recent portfoilio of higher education jobs has included an engineering faculty for Sheffield University and a student accommodation scheme in Glasgow.
