Passengers are now able to check baggage into the hold but 36 Friday flights are cancelled

Chaos continued on the second day of operation at Heathrow鈥檚 newly opened Terminal 5. Some passengers arrived at 4am to start queuing while others spent the night at the airport. By 8am this morning a total of 36 flights - all of them shorthaul - had been cancelled.

Having suspended luggage check-in yesterday following problems with the baggage-system, BA were able to allow hold luggage to be carried onto flights today. A BA spokesman said: "We will have to see how the system holds up. We hope we will do a better job than yesterday."

The terminal is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe, comprising of 16 major interconnecting projects and 140 sub-projects. T5, which has taken over five years to build, will allow for an increase in the number of flights in and out of the airport. Up to 30 million passenger will pass through the terminal every year.
