Engineer sets sights on expansion in the nuclear power market as it acquires American consultant Nuclear Safety Associated

Consultant Atkins has bought a 130-strong American nuclear engineering firm for a consideration of up to 拢16m.

Atkins firm has agreed to pay US$15m (拢9m) as an initial consideration for Nuclear Safety Associated Inc and a further US$12m (拢7m) subject to its future performance.

The US nuclear engineer provides advice and services to clients on nuclear safety, design engineering and professional security.

Uwe Krueger, chief executive of Atkins, said the acquisition was 鈥渁nother step towards鈥 Atkins鈥 鈥渟trategy to be one of the world鈥檚 leading energy consultancies鈥. 

He added: 鈥淣uclear Safety Associated (NSA) will enhance our presence in North America, the world鈥檚 largest nuclear market, and its safety and security skills will strengthen our international nuclear offering.鈥

Atkins is now targeting expansion in the commercial nuclear power market and the decommissioning markets.

Chris Ball, Atkins鈥 managing director for the nuclear business, said: 鈥淎tkins鈥 nuclear business is  supporting countries that are building nuclear for the first time, and those countries are establishing US-style regulatory regimes.
