Work to finish in 2021
AHMM has been chosen by Tower Hamlets council to lead a 拢77 million redevelopment of Old Royal London Hospital into a new civic centre.
The Stirling Prize winner will act as lead consultant as well as architect for the scheme in Whitechapel, east London, to convert the grade II-listed former hospital.
The scheme will see Jon Onslow House on Roman Road overhauled and the civic centre act as an anchor for wider regeneration of Whitechapel ahead of the opening of Crossrail in 2018. In total, the wider regeneration programme will see up to 3,500 new homes built in the locality.
Tower Hamlets council chief executive Will Tuckey said: 鈥淭he Civic Centre will be a key building contributing to the regeneration of the area and securing the future of a building of heritage importance for the borough.鈥
The building is expected to complete by the end of 2021.
