Opponents mull appeal against court decision
A legal bid to stop Heatherwick Studio鈥檚 Garden Bridge has been thrown out by a judge.
Waterloo resident Jenny O鈥橬eill had applied for leave for a judicial review of Lambeth council鈥檚 decision over lease arrangements for the plot on the South Bank where the bridge would land. It is owned by Coin Street Community Builders.
But a high court judge refused leave for that case to be heard.
O鈥橬eill has 14 days to appeal and opponents of the bridge indicated to BD that they would seriously consider this course of action.
Lambeth council welcomed the court鈥檚 decision.
The Garden Bridge Trust described it as 鈥渢he final attempt by opponents of the Garden Bridge to challenge Lambeth Council鈥檚 decision on lease arrangements鈥.
A spokesperson for the trust said: 鈥淭his is great news and an important step forward for the Garden Bridge. We now need to conclude negotiations with Coin Street Community Builders in order to acquire the land so we can start building the bridge.
鈥淚t is a shame that our opponents chose to waste time and public money on a second judicial review which was aimed at deliberately delaying the project. We look forward to making the bridge happen.鈥
