David Cameron and Boris Johnson went 40 metres below the capital to thank engineers involved in the project
Prime Minister David Cameron and Mayor of London Boris Johnson celebrated the completion of all 26 miles of Crossrail鈥檚 tunnels by going 40 metres underground to thank the engineers constructing the 拢14.8bn east-west railway.
Tunnelling began in the summer of 2012 and ended at Farringdon this week, with tunnel boring machine 鈥榁ictoria鈥 completing the final section.
Over 10,000 people are currently working on Crossrail, including around 450 apprentices.
The prime minister said: 鈥淭he project is a vital part of our long term plan to build a more resilient economy by helping businesses to grow, compete and create jobs right along the supply chain.鈥
