Squire and Partners submits design for former Bank of England site in Birmingham
Property fund manager Henderson Global Investors has submitted a planning application to Birmingham City Council for the proposed redevelopment of 55 Temple Row.
The 拢70m scheme is for a new 10 storey building comprising 1,662m虏 of retail space and 16,196m虏 of Grade A, BREEAM "excellent" office accommodation.
London-based architect Squire and Partners has produced the proposed designs for the former Bank of England building built in the 70s, which was vacated following the decision in 1997 to close the bank's regional offices.
Situated at the heart of the Colmore Row Conservation Area, and opposite St Philip鈥檚 Cathedral, a recent public survey revealed that the general public wish to redevelop the site with a building that is more fitting to this location.
The new building will be faced in stone with carefully detailed bronze windows so as to present a quiet, respectful, yet modern building that will fit well within the city core.

Subject to planning and permissions, demolition of the existing building could commence in spring 2010 and the new building could be completed in early 2012.
