Work starts on upgrading to motorway of 18km section of the A80 between Glasgow and Stirling
More than 500 construction jobs will be created by a 拢320m road upgrade in Scotland, ministers announced yesterday.
Transport Scotland has signed a contract with Highway Management to convert to motorway an 18km section of the A80, Scotland's busiest north-south route.
Scottish transport minister Stewart Stevenson said that the scheme, between Glasgow and Stirling, will create hundreds of jobs over two years.
He said: 鈥淭he Scottish government is absolutely clear that an efficient transport system is essential for enhancing productivity and delivering faster, more sustainable growth.
鈥淭his project is another example of how our continuing investment is helping the hard-pressed construction sector now, creating hundreds of construction jobs.鈥
The work comprises construction of both two- and three-lane motorway. Preparatory work has already begun and the project is expected to complete by 2011.
The contract with Highway Management (Scotland), a consortium comprising Bilfinger Berger, John Graham and Northstone, includes maintaining the road for 30 years.
