Regeneration of canal docklands area set to begin as council give unanimous approval for mixed-use scheme.
Gloucester Council has given the go-ahead for a £200 million scheme to develop a 62-acre, brownfield site on the side of the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal.
The Gloucester Quays scheme is a joint venture between British Waterways and Peel Developments UK, and includes a new campus for the cty’s college of further education, a factory outlet store build inside the old industrial buildings, more than a thousand residential units, and a range of leisure facilities.
Redevelopment of the site, which is largely derelict, is supported by local residents, and is seen as crucial in regenerating the area.
The project must now go to the Government office of the South West, where it will either been given the green light, or, in the event of any objections, be subjected to a public inquiry.
