Four out of five large civils contractors reported fall in workload in last quarter
New figures from the Civil Engineering Contractors Association show that 79% of large civils contractors have experienced a fall in workload.
The quarterly Workload Trends survey shows that major infrastructure work has started to take a big hit, having previously fared better than the building sector. According to the stats 79% of civils contractors who employ over 600 people have experienced a fall in workload, whilst 67% of all firms experienced a fall compared with 12 months earlier. Only 8% saw their workloads rise.
Major contractors are hoping that public spending cuts on civil work will not be too severe, but already there is worry that Crossrail will be scaled back and that road contracts may be put on hold.
CECA鈥檚 national director, Rosemary Beales, said: 鈥淭he industry will be aware that the government is running the rule over all areas of public sector spending, with a real danger that cuts mean the situation gets worse before it gets better.鈥
