11:45AM Doha office QSs to advise on £2bn Ras Laffan scheme
Gardiner & Theobald is to advise on a $2bn project to build a new port in Qatar. The firm will provide commercial, contractual and risk advice on the scheme at Ras Laffan Industrial City to the north of the country.
G&T has assigned two QSs from its Doha operation to work on the job full time. Scott Aitken and Stephen Cowell will work under project partner Stewart Whittle.
The scheme involves dredging 20m m³ of limestone. The material will be dug out by three heavy-duty cutter suction dredgers and then used as landfill for the new terminal.
The port is to feature breakwaters to protect the harbour. The total length of the breakwaters will be 24km and they will be built using around 18m tonnes of stone and 25m m³ of concrete.
The main contractor is a joint venture comprising Dutch firm Royal Boskalis Westminster and Belgium’s Jan de Nul. The two contractors built the existing harbour at Ras Laffan in 1992.
The project aims to quadruple the capacity of the existing facility. Its main purpose will be exporting liquefied natural gas.
